It gives us immense pride to welcome on board Alexander Jewell, who joined Leaf in December 2022 as Laboratory Technician!
Alexander built his experience working as a Quality Control Technician, and then as a Laboratory Assistant at the University of Iowa. Alexander gained yeast fermentation knowledge through baking applications in previous positions.
In his role, Alexander assists in a variety of projects related to ethanol production, and in the setting up and conducting of chemical, physical and microbiological analysis within the Green Lab.

- What is your school background?
Alexander: “I have an Associates in Culinary Arts as well as several years of college level chemistry.”
- What motivates you in your work?
Alexander: “I feel motivated by my general curiosity of how things work, and wanting to make a difference in the world. I have always enjoyed working with and helping people. It brings me a lot of joy seeing the impact you can have in someone’s life just by reaching out and lending a hand!”
- Who inspires you?
Alexander: “I am often inspired by one of my favorite chefs Kenji Lopez-Alt. He has a fantastic natural curiosity and desire to understand why something works the way that it does and how it can be improved upon using basic scientific principles”
- What do you like most about teamwork?
“I love working in a team, the collective insights and vast array of experiences that each individual can bring to a team is what helps move the ball forward and offers the opportunity to learn new skills.”
- What are your previous professional experiences?
“I have several years of experience working in a microbiology lab at the University of Iowa where I assisted in projects researching cystic fibrosis, SARS and MERS viruses. I am also a professionally trained chef and have spent much of my career working in a variety of restaurants honing my skills and trying to bring joy to the world through food.”
